International museum and heritage professionals explore sustainability issues at ICOM-DEMHIST conference
The ICOM-DEMHIST Conference 2021 will take place from October 4-8, 2021. This international committee is part of ICOM (International Council of Museums) and is concerned with the preservation and management of Historic House Museums. Under the conference title: "Historic House Museums for a Sustainable World: Challenges and Opportunities", the theme of sustainability and its meaning for historic house museums and heritage will be highlighted and explored. The conference is open to anyone interested in heritage, museums, sustainability, and crisis adaptation.
"Museums are increasingly aware of the need to become more sustainable," said Yvonne Ploum, chair of ICOM-DEMHIST and director of conference co-organizer Heritage Academy. "Many museums are therefore already doing green work and thinking green, contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to creating a sustainable future. Governments and funding agencies are also increasingly demanding policies on sustainability."
"As socially responsible institutions and professionals, more and more is expected of us," continues Ploum. "That we deal with the consequences of climate change, such as floods and droughts, and that we fulfill our role as a forum for public debate. As museums and heritage professionals, we all have an important role to play in building a more peaceful, equal, and sustainable future."
International conference with over 25 sustainability experts
"During the conference we will discuss this task and challenge with over 25 experts in the field of sustainability, museums, and climate adaptation. In panel sessions and workshops, together with participants from different continents, we will examine and discuss the challenges and also the methods and manuals that already exist. We will show inspiring examples and we will show that a lot is possible!".
The online program, co-sponsored by the Mondriaan Fund, Dutch Culture/Heritage Desk, the Netherlands Agency for Cultural Heritage and ICOM Netherlands, includes presentations by more than 25 experts and speakers, inspiring workshops, expert sessions, fieldlabs, plenary discussions, paper and poster presentations, inspirationsessions, and three special keynote speakers:
- On Tuesday, October 5, Aishwarya Tipnis, architect and founder of Aishwarya Tipnis Architects from India, will address how we can be sustainable ourselves.
- On Wednesday, October 6, Christopher Garthe , creative director KLV studio from Germany, will explain how we can use collections and programming to create awareness and effect change inside and outside the museum sector.
- Sarah Sutton, CEO of Environment and Culture Partners, USA, will speak on Thursday, October 7, about crisis resilience during and after Covid-19, and the enormous potential that museums and heritage institutions have to contribute to sustainable solutions.
The opening and closing plenaries of the conference will take place on October 4 and 8, as well as the General Assembly for Demhist members.
Inspiring examples from practice
In addition, 18 international speakers, involved in historic house museums in 11 different countries, will share their experiences around the conference theme of historic house museums and sustainability. The different types of house museums and their diverse geographical and social contexts reflect the wide range of challenges and opportunities facing historic house museums. Indeed, sustainability is a topic of primary importance.
