Webinar Describing and Valying Monuments: developing a Caribbean Standard
In the beginning of October the Dutch Caribbean Heritage Platform (DCHP) is organizing a workshop in Bonaire. Goal of this workshop is to develop a Caribbean Standard for describing and valuing monuments. The response to the call to participate in this workshop was overwhelming. Given the tremendous interest, we have decided to open the preparatory webinar for the workshop to everyone.

Within the kingdom of the Netherlands, the cultural heritage of the Dutch Caribbean islands is a special category. It includes influences from the region and from ‘Holland’ as well. Each island’s heritage is unique and different from the other islands and the European part of the kingdom. Also, the way of preserving it for future generations is different. Even though each island respects its heritage and is willing to take good care of it, there are limited funds and experts to do this important job. Therefore, the Dutch Caribbean Heritage Platform (DCHP) has taken the initiative of connecting the islands experts with experts from the Netherlands and younger, new and emerging local experts.
This initiative is supported by the Ministry of Culture (OCW), Rijksdienst Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE) and the Nationaal Restauratiefonds (NRF). As stated, the goal of the workshop is to decide upon a Caribbean standard for describing and validating tangible heritage on the six islands. With this standard, it will be easier to transfer this knowledge to the next generation, new experts who are willing to learn. It also creates a group of experts who, after the workshop, can be called upon to assist on the different islands when necessary. Currently, none of the islands has the capacity to employ such an expert full-time.

What can I expect from this webinar?
We will have two guest speakers who will share their experiences with describing and valuing monuments over the years and on different islands. They will both give a presentation, and following their presentations, there will be ample time for Q&A. The presentations will be in Dutch and English. But feel free to ask your questions in Papiamento, Dutch or English.
