More information about this webinar
Constitution Hill located in Johannesburg, South Africa, opened its doors to the public as a museum on March 22, 2004. This followed the inauguration of the Constitutional Court on March 21, 2004, which was celebrated on Human Rights Day. Thus, a place of oppression and pain has been remolded to become a place of reconciliation. Recently the site has been listed, jointly with related structures in the country as a UNESCO World Heritage property.
The Peace Palace in The Hague houses UN’s International Court of Justice. The monumental building was constructed in 1913 in an eclectic architecture with the funds provided by Andrew Carnegie. The establishment of the International Court of Justice was a reaction to the growing geo-political tensions at the time, trying to counterweigh the ongoing arms race. It also houses the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The Peace Palace is being owned and managed by the Carnegie Foundation and has been awarded with a European Heritage Label in 2014.
Keeping these important sites relevant for current and future generations requires maintenance and conservation on the one hand. On the other hand and at the same time it also requires adaptation to a changing society and to shifting needs.
The webinar will address these joint challenges, expecting that an exchange between peers will be beneficial for both. The challenges addressed will cover three main shared concerns:
- Maintenance
How to deal with the physical upkeep and maintenance of the valued built structures? - Interpretation
How to interpret and present the values these structures represent to a current generation? - Spatial connection
How do these structures relate to their surrounding neighborhoods and communities living around?
